Sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is a tuition-free Episcopal school for children from traditionally underserved communities. The School nurtures the spiritual, intellectual, social-emotional, artistic and physical development of its students in a Christian community of learners that welcomes boys of all faiths and beliefs. The Bishop Walker School is currently seeking qualified candidates for the following positions:

Summer Lead Teacher
The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys seeks dynamic Summer Lead Teachers (K-5) for the Summer of 2021 to educate and encourage the intellectual and social development of boys as a part of our long-term response to COVID-19 academic gaps. The Summer Lead Teacher is responsible for teaching a maximum of 16 students in all areas of the curriculum. The Summer Lead Teacher should have a commitment to urban education and inspiring excellence.

Candidates should be familiar with Responsive Classroom, Guided Reading and Writer’s Workshop.

Excellent performance in this summer-time position could lead to a full-time Teaching Assistant position for the 2021-22 school year.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of teaching experience preferred
  • BA or MA in Elementary Education or related field (e.g., Reading, Curriculum and Instruction) preferred
  • BA required

Responsibilities

  • Establish high expectations for student academic performance and behavior.
  • Implement respective grade curriculum, including group/individualized summer academic plans.
  • Instruct students in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science.
  • Collaborate with Lead Teachers, Teaching Assistants, and Specials Teachers.
  • Form and maintain positive partnerships with parents.
  • Clearly articulate both verbally and in writing students’ progress.
  • Maintain the health and safety protocols of our school.

Permanent Substitute Teacher

Department: Academics
Reports to: Head of School, Assistant Head of School- Head of Academics/School Culture

Purpose: The Permanent substitute will provide classroom coverage as assigned when a lead teacher is absent. The permanent substitute should have experience working with age groups Kindergarten through Fifth grade and experience teaching developmentally appropriate skills. When not covering for a lead teacher, the permanent substitute will serve as a Teaching Assistant for 4th and 5th Grade. This position is responsible for collaborating with all members of the community (teachers, families, scholars, admission/outplacement department, outside consultants, counselor, and academic administration) to maximize opportunities for success for scholars at BWS. All BWS staff are expected to work towards BWS’s mission and vision.

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Compliance with BWS’s policies/procedures as stated in the personnel handbook
  • Regular and punctual attendance
  • Participation in staff meetings, including division, department, grade-level, open meetings, professional development days, etc.
  • Participation in school-wide events, including assemblies on and off campus, Open Houses, Back to School Night, etc.
  • Compliance with deadlines
  • Participation in regular goal-setting, reflection and professional growth opportunities
  • Support with the coordination of tutors and other outside professionals that work with BWS scholars
  • Establish and maintain relationships with all stakeholders invested in the BWS scholars on caseload
  • Supporting and upholding classroom/school expectations and routines.
  • Communicates with parents, teachers, and/or administration as appropriate
  • Collaboration with colleagues on school-wide initiatives

Instruction & Curriculum:

  • Alignment with BWS’s mission, philosophy, and program goals
  • Observation of individual scholars in classrooms in order to assist the teachers in assessing and supporting scholars who require support
  • Collaboration with teachers with regard to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, and academic team planning meetings
  • Collaboration with teachers on morning meetings, homework load, grade-level expectations, etc.
  • Individual meetings with scholars to address various needs (organizational support, study support)
  • Actively participate in behavior management

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with a background in Education or related field
  • Mastery of skills/content/understandings of developmental stages of scholars, K-5
  • Experience using standard office equipment and school technology
  • Ability to work collaboratively and constructively as a member of a team
    Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
