Academics

Bishop Walker School teacher reading with studentsFrederick Douglas stated, "It is better to build a boy than repair a man." This quote aptly describes the responsibility of the Bishop John T. Walker School. Our school has been entrusted with the care of some of the most vulnerable members of our society - young, low-income boys of color. Every day our teachers and staff help our students unwrap their gifts and talents to discover who they are and who they can become.

Social and moral education is just as important as intellectual education at the Bishop Walker School. As an Episcopal school, we embrace our faith and the varied faith traditions of our students. We also spend a great deal of time talking to our students about what it means to be a gentleman and a person of strong character. A Bishop Walker School gentleman embodies honesty, respect, responsibility and perseverance. Through worship, character education and community service, our students’ self-awareness, spirituality and connection to others are deepened.

The rich educational experiences our students enjoy can be attributed to the commitment and preparation of our teachers. We have been able to hire teachers from some of the top universities and teacher training programs in the nation. We have carefully selected teachers who believe in the mission of the school and that our students deserve the very best. Our faculty cultivates a love of learning in our students because they, themselves, still enjoy learning. So that we can enhance our instruction and deepen our relationships with students, we provide on-site professional development throughout the school year as well as more intensive programs during the summer.

Bishop Walker believed that education is the door to opportunity. He saw the need for all children to have an education in which high expectations are set and outstanding achievement expected. The Bishop Walker School is laying a foundation of strong academics supported by pillars of the Episcopal faith and tradition; service to others; and pride in oneself and one’s community. We believe this foundation will lead to lasting change in the lives of the students we serve and the broader community.
